Overview about pepper export market

The amount of pepper export in 2020 increased by 2% compared to 2019 and reached 460,000 tons. Vietnam accounted for about 60% of the world’s pepper export amount. Recently, in 2/2021, major pepper-producing countries such as Brazil, India, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka witnessed the highest price of black pepper in 4 years later.

Experts predict the demand will continue to promote by 2-3% while the demand increase by 8 – 10% per year. In 2021, the amount of world pepper production will reach 660,000 tons and up to 1 million tons in 2050.

Agricultural countries, including Vietnam, Brazil, and Sri Lanka are the main suppliers of pepper:

  • Vietnam: With favorable soil conditions and good farming techniques, Vietnam has become the world’s largest pepper exporter with a volume of 2.4ton/ha. In addition, reasonable best selling Vietnam pepper export price is also an important factor for a large volume of black pepper export.
  • Brazil: Having a long history of pepper production and suitable soil condition: lowland, rain, and weather, Brazil dominate the black pepper market.
  • Indonesia’s main pepper export markets include Vietnam, China, and the US, accounting for 50% of the country’s total pepper exports. In the first 9 months of 2001, Indonesia’s pepper exports to Vietnam, China decreased by 50% and 40% respectively. Indonesia’s pepper production and productivity decreased to focus on supplying the domestic market.
  • Sri Lanka is one of the pepper-producing countries in South Asia popular for its pepper quality: high amount of piperine and a natural antioxidant. Sri Lanka’s best-performing destinations for pepper are India, Germany, the U.S, and Spain. India is the largest importer of Sri Lanka pepper due to the preference for import tax under SAFTA.
